Good communication is the foundation of proper dog training. You need to be consistent and be clear with what you expect from your dog. This applies to corrections and rewards, as well as your body language, when training. Don't ignore the things that your dog is telling you. His body language can tell you a lot about how he's feeling and what he's in the mood for.

Prepare your dog in having veterinary examinations. Give your pet lots of attention and positive reinforcement during this time. Prepare him to be more tolerant with having his paws handled and his teeth looked at. Your friends may be able to help you out, too.

It is important to involve the entire family when it comes to training your puppy or dog. You may have one member of the family that does much of the training with him, but by having the entire family take part in the training, he will learn that he must obey each person that lives in the home.

Make sure everyone who is going to care for your dog treats him or her in the same way as you would. Consistency is key in dog training. If someone is training the dog one way and someone else tries something different, the dog will become confused on how to behave properly.

Always give your dog the tools for success. If you are training it to stop chewing things it shouldn't be chewing on, give it things that it can chew on. Remember to keep you dog away from anything that is considered dangerous to chew. Hairbrushes, nylons, and other common household items pose a danger to dogs and can lead to choking and obstructions.

While you are in the process of housebreaking your puppy, expect the occasional accident to occur. Any accidents should be cleaned up as soon as possible to help with the training efforts. If your carpet begins to smell like urine and feces, your puppy will believe that it is the right place to potty and return to it again and again. A pet shop in your area will carry products specifically for this problem.

Keep your dog outside while you are away from home to prevent it from chewing on your items. If you have an indoor dog that is not kennel trained, then close them out of the rooms in which they like to chew.

Train your dog in little steps if what you want him to do is a bit more complicated. One simple task you can teach your dog is to retrieve the morning paper. To begin this process, you have to teach him how he can hold onto an object. Next, your dog will need to learn the object's name. He then should know how to pick the object up. Finally, the dog should return it to you. If you break it down, your dog will understand the linear relationship of the behavior.

Do not be too proud to contact a professional for assistance. If you are having trouble training your dog, consider calling in a professional. Professional trainers have dealt with all types of dogs and problems, so they are capable of figuring out exactly why your training isn't going as planned, and how to fix it so that your dog does as it's told.

After learning some helpful hints on how to get through to your dog and train it to behave to your expectations you simply need to follow what you have learned. After changing your dogs behavior to fit with the tips suggested you can properly train your dog.
