You Want To Skateboard And You're Clueless

You can have loads of fun skateboarding. Skateboarding used to be some off-beat thing only young people did. But now it's a legitimate, recognized sport complete with endorsements and business participation. Its possible to earn a good living from it, like Tony Hawk. And the great news is it's something anyone can learn. But - it takes years of practice if you want to be a pro skater, so that's some bad news. You can do it if you want, but you know it takes a lot of practice, dedication, and hard work. Here are a few great suggestions to help you on your way.

There's more than meets the casual eye. It's not just pushing yourself along. When you push-off, it must be smooth and strong. It is not meant to be short or stuttering or done rapidly.

Try using a long, deep, strong motion when you're pushing-off. This gives you more power, plus you can recover better if you lose your balance. You should be able pick-up speed pretty fast. Your stance will determine how you push-off, too. If you're new to skating, it's a good idea to stay on level ground, and use a board that's well-made and sturdy. You'll learn better and faster on an even surface because you'll have stability when you can firmly plant your feet. As you learn how to properly push off, you can practice on increasingly uneven surfaces.

Ok, when you want to turn - shift your weight in the right direction and hold your balance the best you can.

But you won't lean completely toward the back or front directions. Try to shift to the ball of your foot, or your heel, from the flat-footed position. Your body should remain upright as you do this and should not sway at all. You may fall if you're leaning or swaying too much. Find an uncrowded surface that's flat and even. You can get the feel for shifting weight with wide turns that are gentle, then you can try more sharper turning. Once you're good with that, then it's cool to try lifting the board front just a little so you can do sharper turns.

However, stopping the board is a bit more involved. When you are just beginning, you might have better luck simply dragging your foot to slow you down. But you can practice doing the opposite of pushing-off, take smallish steps to decrease speed. This applies an opposite, braking force in the opposite direction.

This can punish your feet a little but it'll stop you. With more experience, you can just lift the board and drag the tail to come to a complete stop. But... you do want to avoid tail-grinding if you're going a bit fast.

Skating doesn't need to be terribly hard, but it will require some time from you. Just have patience and never worry about it. You'll get there. Learn the basics first, then start working on the tricks. Going too far and too fast is the way to get unnecessarily hurt. Keep skating and just maybe you'll be the next Tony Hawk.
