There is more to baby skin care than most parents realize. Proper infant skin care means caring for all of a baby's skin (aka the whole body). Newborn babies are very susceptible to skin conditions because it takes time for the skin to get used to life outside of the womb. Proper baby skin care means that parents must make good decisions continually throughout the day. Everything from the soap you use in the bath to the clothes you put him into will affect the condition of your baby's skin. Don't freak out yet--good skin care does not have to be complicated or difficult. With just a little bit of common sense it can be really simple. If you need some help figuring out just how to care for your baby's skin, keep reading!
During diaper changes skip the powder. Most parents choose to use powder because it will soak up moisture inside of the diaper and keep the baby dry.
Yeast grows in heavier corn starches and finer powders, like talcum, are easy for babies to inhale. The best thing to do is forego the powders and starches all together and simply wash and dry the baby's bottom before putting a new diaper on him. This will keep diaper rashes and yeast issues from happening and wreaking havoc on your baby's skin.
Choose a gentle detergent when you wash your baby's clothing. Your laundry detergent is going to be far too harsh to use on your new baby's clothing. Regular soap will often leave behind an irritating residue and take away the softness of your baby's clothing. Using a gentle detergent will keep baby's clothing from getting rough and will rinse off of the clothing easier so you won't have to worry about any residue causing problems on your baby's skin.
During the first six months of your baby's life you want to do everything you can to keep him or her out of direct sunlight because direct sunlight can prove too harsh for your baby's skin, which will be very sensitive to light. After six months you will want to use a strong baby sunscreen on every inch of your baby's body that is not covered in clothing when you go outside.
You will also want to take extra precaution against the sun with hats and umbrellas. If your baby does develop a sunburn, treat it with a cool damp soft cloth for ten to fifteen minutes a few times a day.
There are many different baby skin care methods to choose from. The truth is that baby skin care does not need to be complicated or difficult. If you buy the right baby skin care products and use your good judgment, your baby's skin should be relatively problem-free. Remember that you are caring for all of your baby's skin, not just the skin on his face. Caring for your baby's skin will depend on your making a lot of smart decisions all day long, but don't freak out! Before you know it, you'll be taking care of your baby's skin without even thinking about it much at all! It won't take long for it to become second nature. It will be an automatic response!
