Learning Japanese is an admirable decision, especially for people without experience learning new languages. You not only have to learn a completely different way of speaking, but even a whole new alphabet and ways of reading and writing. It's not only a matter of memorizing the meanings of a few words! Of course, that doesn't mean that you can't do it. You are perfectly capable of learning Japanese. If you approach it in the right way, the process becomes more manageable. Use some of these tested methods and you'll find that you will learn faster and more efficiently.

Watch Anime! This is probably the most fun homework assignment you will get when you decide to learn Japanese. Anime is a well known type of Japanese animation that is now easy to find. Anime is now quite popular in the West, and you can find it in Japanese with subtitles or dubbed in English (which won't do you much good!).This type of animation now has a cult following all over the Western world, and can be found in Japanese with subtitles or dubbed in English, though the latter won't help you learn Japanese! Finding Anime isn't difficult; look on the web or anywhere that sells or rents dvds and videos. You have to find shows that are in Japanese with subtitles, so you can listen and read the subtitles. Just pay attention to the way words and phrases are used, and you'll naturally start to develop a vocabulary and knowledge of sentence structure. You'll probably have more fun with this method of learning Japanese than any other! Some of the better anime series are Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist and TriGun. Take the time to study the Japanese alphabet. You do not have to learn proper spelling, but at least learn what symbols correlate to what sounds. This will give you a basic ability communicate, as you can always write down something that is close to what you are trying to say. This is very useful if you ever go to Japan and are not yet fluent enough to be able to speak confidently. If you can write down words even phonetically, you'll find that you can communicate when you have to; you'll also be learning how to read in the new language.

You should also play any Japanese audio programs you are using at times when you aren't consciously trying to learn. Naturally, there is great benefit to straightforward study, when you pay attention and practice your drills and assignments. But you can also learn by using the subconscious mind. So you can have your tapes or mp3 programs playing while you do other things, whether it's cleaning the house, cooking or taking a drive to the store. Every time the vocabulary and phrases are repeated, a part of your mind is taking this in and remembering it. You may be surprised at how much you can recall from these sessions! You could try what is known as sleep learning, letting the recordings play as you sleep!

It takes a certain amount of ambition and even courage to start learning Japanese. Japanese is a difficult language and it takes dedication and perseverance, but once you learn it, you won't ever forget it! Think of the cultural opportunities it would open for you! Imagine being able to watch anime without needing the subtitles.

How many people (outside of Japan) could do that? Traveling in Japan won't be as difficult as it would have been otherwise. Then, if you ever want to study another Eastern language, it would be much simpler to do. There are lots of benefits to expanding your language base!
