Children develop at an astronomical rate. In one moment there is nothing more than a few cells and almost immediately vital organs are being built. It takes only nine months to go from a couple of cells to a being fully capable of living independently. It doesn't take long for personal preferences and personalities to emerge. You probably already know a few facts about babies, like that they cannot change their own diapers and that they don't yet know how to speak and that it takes them a while to figure out how to move on their own. This article contains a few facts about early childhood and babies that should be new to you.
Many colors look almost identical to babies when they are born. Babies are born with eyes that are not completely finished yet and only partially formed synapses between the eyes and the brain. The best colors you can use for your nursery and for your baby's toys are primary colors, not pastels. Bold and bright colors like reds and greens and blues or even white and black are the easiest colors for babies to see. Pastels tend to run together.
Believe it or not, this is why a baby will sometimes favor certain toys. What this means is that all of the black and white stuff that you think of as ugly is actually better for your baby's eyesight and brain development than the more traditional and popular pastel based decorations and toys. Most babies are born knowing instinctually how to swim and how to hold their breath. This is also something that your baby will rapidly forget as well. This is one of the reasons many experts are in favor of women having water births. Because the baby spends the first few months of their lives basically swimming inside their mothers' wombs, experts believe that giving birth in water helps to ease the transition. These experts believe that the water helps them smooth the way from being a totally depended fetus to being an independent baby much better than a regular hospital birth.
While crying is the baby's main way of signaling that he or she needs or wants something, there won't be any tears with that wail until a few weeks after he has been born. When a person gets stressed he or she secretes a hormone that is only found in tears. This is one of the reasons that stress makes people cry: the body forces the stress induced hormones out of the body to calm itself down. Your baby won't create this hormone until after you have given birth to him. The stress hormone does not usually start to show up until the baby has been out of the womb for at least a few weeks. Other babies can take a few months to begin producing tears when they cry.
There are lots of things about babies that most people do not know. Learning about infants and young children can be quite interesting. The more you know about the subject the more you will enjoy watching your children grow up!
