Childhood development is fascinating. The process by which a small ball of cells becomes a fully functional person will blow your mind. Growing up is a more complicated process than most people realize. Babies are adorable and very complicated beings. They each have individual needs and wants that parents need to take care of to make sure that development occurs the way it should. You probably have no idea how complex being a baby can be. Understanding what is happening for your baby will make being a parent even more rewarding!

Babies can sense light changes even in the womb. Your eyes are very intricate organs that consist of millions of fibers and nerve endings. The coordination needed for the eyes to function properly is extraordinary. A baby has eyes that are useful within a few months of being conceived. Even as early as six months after conception your baby will show signs of light sensitivity. Another interesting fact about babies: most Caucasian babies will not show their "true" eye color until a few months after they are born. Babies born with blue eyes often do not keep that eye color. Don't get too set on the color blue you see in a newborn's eyes. They might not stay that way!

Did you know that not all babies are born toothless? On the other hand, other babies don't even start teething until they are more than a year old.

Most parents dread the teething process. Don't worry too much about when your child's first teeth will start to appear. There is no guarantee when it comes to childhood development even in a family with lots of kids-your baby will grow at the pace that nature has intended for him and him alone.

Common knowledge states that babies don't smile until long after they are born. Smiling is often attributed to gas or the baby's having to go to the bathroom-at least until it reaches a few weeks in age. For a long time it was common thought that smiling was a learned behavior-something that the baby learned from his or her parents over the first few weeks of life. Common thought said that learning how to express happiness was harder for babies than learning how to express displeasure (which is usually done through crying). These theories have been mostly disproved. Advances have been made in ultrasound technology and more parents are seeing images of their children smiling while they are still in utero. Many families have been given ultrasound pictures of their smiling children weeks before they are due to be born. Some scientists now believe that the reason babies take so long to "learn" to smile is because the birthing process is so traumatic for them. There are new discoveries being made constantly about babies and infant development. What scientists believe as fact today could be proven false tomorrow! Are you really surprised by how confusion most people find infancy since you now know how rapidly new discoveries are being made? Staying current with the trends can be easy if you don't mind doing a little bit of homework. Infancy is more complex than people think. They are complex creatures with specific needs and wants. It is important that you learn how to communicate with your baby. Understanding the different stages of development is very important. You'll be a better parent if you take the time to learn all about your baby.
