Skateboarding is great fun! If you've been paying attention you've no doubt noticed that skateboarding has gone from an odd past time for teenagers to a fully recognized sport for grown adults! Tony Hawk commands a good annual income from skateboarding. But it's really cool because just about anyone can learn skateboarding. However, if you want to be like Tony Hawks it will take a lot of time, patience, and practice. It will require tons of hard work and sacrifice, but if you have the desire - then you can read some great tips to get you started.
Ok, it's really important to wear the right kind of shoes. Skateboarding uses specific muscles in your feet, and you need to be able to move your feet in certain ways to control your board properly. No question, you can wear any kind of shoes you want. But if you want to do more than skate in a straight line, then it's best to get the right foot gear. Skateboarding shoes are just like athletic shoes except the inside is flat. They don't have any arch support, and that's done purposely. That will give your foot more control over the board. They're not expensive or hard to find.
A good beginner board will be inexpensive and can take a good beating. But you can find totally tricked and high quality boards, but be prepared to pay a lot for them. They cost so much you might be afraid to get them dirty or scuffed. That's the purpose of a beginner's skateboard. They have strong wheels and are thicker. They aren't fancy but they are durable and will be able to stand up to the beating that beginning skateboarders usually give them. ABEC skateboards are the way to go because they're more newbie friendly.
Figure out how you want to stand on your skateboard. Might be hard to believe, but skaters have a wide variety of stances they use depending on the situation. The best way to figure out your stance is to simply get on your skateboard and stand still. Find your best comfortable position, the one you feel you can maintain for some time. From here you only need to figure out how to push off to get the board started rolling (and to keep up its speed). So then you try to push-off without needing to go fast/far. Skaters use different push-off techniques. But for now you just want to find a way that's works best for you.
Skating doesn't need to be terribly hard, but it will require some time from you. You'll learn, be patient and relaxed. It is important that you take your time to really learn the skateboarding basics before you try to do anything fancy. Trying to do too much too soon is only good for getting injured. Keep doing it, you could be better than Tony Hawk.
