Many parents today are deciding that home schooling is the best choice for their kids -if you've come to this conclusion, you should find out as much as you can about taking this road. You have to take on the role of teacher, which means getting prepared for the academics as well as any legal issues. Home schooling can be very rewarding, but it does require you to do some preparation.
If home schooling is new for you and your children, it's really difficult to predict what it will be like. Summer is a good time to try out home schooling to find out how you and your kids truly feel about it. It really won't take that long for you and your kids to find out what a home schooling schedule will be like -a few days every week or perhaps several weeks in a row should be all it takes. At least when you do this, you'll have a much more realistic idea of what home schooling entails -this could even make you rethink your position on the subject. Either way, it's a good idea to test the waters before making a commitment to home schooling your kids.
No matter what home schooling philosophy you want to follow, you have to consider the topic of disciplining your kids. Just as teachers in a traditional classroom must be able to hold the kids' attention and enforce certain rules, so you'll have to do these things as a parent-teacher. It may be difficult, especially at first, to convince a child that home is going to serve as a school for a certain number of hours every day. If their attention wanders, you have to bring it back to the subject at hand. Home schooling can't compete with smart phones, televisions or computers, so these must be off limits during school (unless the computer is being used as part of the lesson).
Time management should be at the top of the list of skill sets you need to conquer if you plan to successfully home school your kids. When you are facing a whole day without the time constraints of hauling the kids to school and packing lunches, you may mistakenly believe that there is adequate time for anything you need to do. You will soon discover, however, that the time flies by and you haven't been able to complete the day's agenda. Like most people who "work from home", you can easily be distracted by your other responsibilities. However, home schooling is a full-time job as well. If you set a fixed schedule for each day, much like a traditional school, you will find it much easier to get everything done. Regardless of the fact that your children won't have far to travel to get to "class", it's still a good idea to have fixed starting and ending times for each school day.
Although there are many advantages to home schooling, you should realize that it also carries with it some challenges. Both parents and children have to think of home schooling as a serious undertaking; that's the only way to make it really work. Home schooling, like anything else, will take some getting used to, but both you and your kids may find that it's a very rewarding adventure.
