Carp fishing has become more popular in recent years, especially in the United States, where it was once looked down upon by most sport fishermen. These days carp fishermen have grown to admire the carp, mainly
because of their gutsy personalities, especially of the larger fish, which makes fishing for them a contest for a serious sport fisherman. When fishing for carp, you can be facing a real contest of wits between you and the fish. You can increase your chances for a successful catch if you learn good techniques, know what bait to use, and always use the correct tackle.

A very quick method for learning about the best methods for carp fishing is to join a carp fishing group. Although there still aren't many groups in North America, there are numerous groups located in Europe. If you do an internet search, you may discover a group, club, or organization not far from where you live. You can still take advantage of the online forums and articles online if you haven't been able to locate an organization in your city. There's no faster way to learn a new skill than practice and actual experience. Whenever you have time, grab your gear and go carp fishing and your results will improve. Inexperienced fishers often make the mistake of scaring fish away without even realizing it. Carp in particular are very sensitive and can easily detect your presence if you're not careful. Therefore, when you are getting close to your fishing spot, become as stealthy as you can. If you're with other people, keep your voices down and minimize conversation as much as possible. After you arrive at your location, use extreme care in laying out your equipment so you don't make a lot of noise. Another tip to keep the fish from leaving is to stay out of the water so it isn't ruffled. This includes tossing refuse in the water as well. Vibrations can also be sensed easily by carp, so it's important to move around your camp lightfooted and only as much as is necessary. And remember they are also sensitive to odors - so try not to smoke or wear strong after shave - and keep the noise down as well.

One bit of research that will help you be more successful is to become knowledgeable about the habits and daily activities of the carp in the area in which you will be fishing. The first bit of information you should have is that carp like warm water. They do best if the water temperature falls in the 60F - 70F range. Carp become dormant and won't feed if the water in their lake or pond goes below 50F. Avoid these areas if you want to be successful. A good place to find carp hiding is under some type of sheltering structure - manmade or natural. Good cover for carp include fabricated structures, such as piers and docks, as well as natural vegetation and outcroppings of rocks. Make some forays around the lake or pond where you will be fishing so you are familiar with the area. This will increase your chance of finding the carp when you are actually fishing. Just keep in mind that if you are a beginner, you will not become an expert carp fisher instantly. Your skills will improve as you have more practice. You should learn as much as you can, and not expect instant results. Be very observant and take note of what the expert carp fishers do. This is a good way to learn many tips and secrets for success quickly. And, lastly, don't be afraid to try new things. Be innovative. Experiment with different bait, don't always go to the same area or spot, and vary the time of day that you go fishing. As you factor these features into your fishing and make adjustment accordingly, you will catch more and more carp.
