If you are a newbie to gardening, then you should be aware of some faux pas to sidestep. If you do make mistakes, it is not the end of the world and you can usually correct them, either right away or next season. Yet, similar to the muddles we will be talking about in this article, if you do some research and plan ahead, you should be able to skirt a lot of the mistakes, even as an amateur gardener.

Whether you are going to plant a vegetable garden, or a flower garden, you need to start small and make it manageable. It really does take a lot of effort to keep everything growing properly, so keep that in mind you want your garden to look as beautiful as you have imagined it. You need to consider that each plant needs a specific amount of space in order to grow properly. If you are just starting out, make sure your garden is small and manageable. Doing too much is usually what holds people back from becoming successful - this is also true of gardening. If you diversify too much, and have too many plants with different needs, you will not be able to take care of them all - there is just not enough time in the day.

Without water, a garden will die. Unfortunately, this is something that a lot of gardeners don't pay sufficient attention to and their gardens suffer. The problem is, not all plants need the same amount of water, which is why you shouldn't plant species with very different needs close to one another. Various factors will tell you how often you need to water. Two of these variables are your local climate and the amount of rainfall you can expect. A simple gadget called a soil tester can help you accurately judge the moisture content of your soil. If you use a soil tester, there will be no doubt about when it's watering time. Most plants are healthiest when the soil is moist, but not too wet. Over-watering can be just as harmful to plants as under-watering.

Sunlight is another important aspect to consider. Each plant has different needs. Once you are able to figure out how much each plant needs, you can plant your garden with confidence. To ensure the health of your plants, especially vegetables, six hours of sunlight is recommended. Consider how much sunlight will occur over your garden area before you plant. If sunlight is not something that is abundant in your area, some plants actually like shade instead. It is possible to over expose plants to too much natural light which can cause them to wither and die. Reflected sunlight is also an option for some plants that cannot handle the direct sunlight.

Make it a point to familiarize yourself about the common mistakes gardeners make so you can avoid them and increase the chances of your garden being productive. The biggest culprits that lead to an unhealthy garden are poor planning and taking a half-hearted approach to gardening. Keep these steps in mind as you set about planning your garden and you will have successful results. If you order seeds, the company you buy from will give you advice on how to grow the plants successfully. You can also talk to the people at your local garden center to find out what you need to know.
