Get everyone in your house on the same page regarding dog training. Make sure everyone is on the same page with command words; if the command for being quiet is "quiet," don't let anyone use "stop barking." Your dog is less likely to become confused and will respect everyone in the household if your family makes a few efforts.

If you are training your dog, always associate the exact same word or phrase with the same action or behavior. Your dog can learn to associate a command with a particular behavior, but if you keep changing the command associated with a behavior, you'll confuse him and he won't do what you want him to do. Always remember that it is extremely beneficial to your training sessions if you remain consistent. It will make your dog happy to see you pleased by his actions.

Showing him that you are in control is the first lesson to teach your dog. It is important for your dog to know that you are the one who is in control, so that he respects and obeys you. It is important to walk ahead of your dog when taking him for a walk. This will let him know that you are the leader.

Dogs can learn a multi-step behavior by stepwise refinement just like humans can. A good thing to teach your dog to do is to get the paper in the morning. The first step is him holding an object. Next, the puppy needs to learn how to find the object on command. Next, teach him to pick up your paper. Finally, your dog should learn to bring an object to you on command. When you break down the actions like this, it will be easier to communicate what you want to your dog.

Try to incorporate play into your training sessions with your dog. When you play with your dog, you help make a stranger bond between the two of you. In return, he becomes more receptive to being trained. Training may be a fun activity, but it's also good to enjoy your time with your dog.

Your dog needs to stay active during all phases of his life. Dogs are not sedentary animals by nature. To have an enjoyable life, they need to be able to get out and run and work. Make sure your dog gets plenty of walks; play with it at the park, or even look into enrolling it in an agility class. Try not to let boredom set in with your dog by keeping him active as much as possible.

Get your dog ready for veterinary exams at a young age. Give your pet lots of attention and positive reinforcement during this time. Work with him so he is tolerant of having his paws touched and teeth examined. Your friends can help out, too.

Consider the size of your dog when purchasing a bed. While you can purchase a large bed for your dog, you could also just use a mattress from a crib. The perks of these are that you can change out the sheets on crib mattresses as often as you like without too much effort. Even better -- mattresses made for cribs are also waterproof.

After learning some helpful hints on how to get through to your dog and train it to behave to your expectations you simply need to follow what you have learned. After changing your dogs behavior to fit with the tips suggested you can properly train your dog.
