For a while now I've been trying to find a bike to fit my individual style of riding:-
" I like to cover good distances on the road, however I don't fancy a super road bike with drop handlebars and a painful saddle. I use the bike to travel to the office, so I need a sensible, comfy bike that will take a bit of luggage. Mudguards are vital as well - I can't turn up at the office covered in mud.
" Whilst I like to take the odd excursion along a trail or path, I recognize that a mountain bike would not be suitable as the thick tyres make riding on the road just very hard - which is where I intend to do most of my riding.
There's indeed no lack of choice in the marketplace, with many suppliers trying to grab a share of the action. So it's not easy to find your way through all the possibilities. A lot of of the bikes that I checked out were simply not suitable - most were just not quick enough They were fine for casual riding. But they were simply not built for speed. Then I found the Cannondale Quick.
Just one look at the bikes in the Quick collection was enough to tell me that I had discovered the right bike:-
" Light alloy frame, looking as though it was built for speed. The bikes higher up the range have carbon forks as well.
" A good range of gear ratios for (relatively) effortless hill-climbing. The bikes at the top of the range even have road-bike gear components- not usually found on hybrid bikes.
" Mini V-brakes which have plenty of power but are straightforward to maintain, unlike the disc brakes you regularly find.
" The wheels on the models towards the top of the range are really stylish - the paired-spoke arrangement straight out of road-bike territory. I know that they are not as robust as wheels with more spokes in a normal pattern, but these are just fine for road riding.
" The prices are not bad. It's true that there are cheaper bikes available. But the range starts at about £600. You can spend up to £1100 if you choose - a bit out of my price range I have to confess.
So after doing a bit of study on the Internet, I made my way to the local Cannondale stockist for a trial ride. I plumped for a model from the lower half of the range, which appeared to have all the attributes that were most essential to me. However at the same time not too expensive for me.
The test ride was a revelation. The bike felt pretty lively and agile, yet steady. The carbon forks absorbed most of the road vibration and the seating position was very relaxed indeed, excellent for covering the miles. Gear selection was very smooth, with a decent choice of ratios for hill-climbing.
I could see myself looking forward to getting on the bike, even after a hard day at work.
I didn't hesitate. The order was placed. My bike arrives next week. Can't wait.
