Sure you know that most of a baby's day involves sleeping eating and bowel relief. Do you understand why a baby will move his body the way he does? Has someone taught you why a baby grows up in stages? Most people don't concern themselves with the smaller details of a baby's growth. Other parents decide to learn everything they can about the way their child grows and develops as it gets older.
Every day is a surprise when you have a baby! Only half of the things you have learned about babies is correct. You will probably learn at least a few new things when you read this article.
When a baby is born his or her skull plates are not fused. This is just one of the things that makes a newborn so fragile to hold. If you are not careful when you are handling your baby's head, you could accidentally do quite a bit of damage so tread lightly and carefully when you hold your newborn! The good news is that, within about three months the soft spot will harden up and not be quite so sensitive. It can take as long as a year and a half for the frontal plates of your baby's skull to harden, so don't assume that the worst is over when the soft spot calcifies together. Even while a baby is in the womb he can hear sounds, but you already know that. Doctors have proven that babies can hear and react to the sounds that they hear-sometimes very strongly! Did you know that a fetus's ears are just as sensitive to varying decibel levels as those of an infant? Even before the baby is birthed, his ears are very sensitive. Doctors recommend that, while women are pregnant that they keep their music, televisions, etc below the level of a modern vacuum cleaner. You will soon learn that even your vacuum cleaner might be too loud for your baby so keep the noise level to a minimum and try to avoid heavy traffic or construction when you leave the house as it can be too loud as well.
Even though you want to avoid mercury, you can still have fish-just make sure it is a mercury free species! Many doctors recommend eating salmon regularly because it does not contain mercury the way other fish do and because it contains all sorts of healthy things that a mother needs for her growing fetus. Some think if a woman eats fish while she is pregnant that she will improve her baby's brain function and that her child will develop better communication skills than a baby born to a mother who did not consume fish while she was pregnant. This has not yet been proven beyond a doubt so if you do not eat fish, there is no need to panic.
There is lots of baby knowledge out there that is not well known. Interestingly, adults tend to be more patient when they have lots of information to help them understand something.
The best way to parent a baby is to arm yourself with lots of knowledge about childhood development. Good luck!
